Yoga therapist Mukunda Stiles has composed a set of 18 lessons on how to locate, increase and store prana in the subtle bodies. This process is based on Ayurvedic and Classical Yoga principles. Special reference to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the text of Ayurveda, Charaka Samhita reveals the process of pranayama enhanced by mudras for developing a higher state of consciousness that can also be directed to physical and spiritual healing.

The goal of increasing one's prana is to promote higher wisdom and higher pranic force, to begin to help us on  a practical level make better decisions about daily events, and on a spiritual level,  to begin to see the unity of all life through this transformative process. Prana is one of three fundamental forces in yoga and tantra that is used for promoting mental and physical strength. By regulating the breath, we can alter our consciousness and move it to a  higher level by the practice of deliberate serenity. From a tantric point of view, the more we expand our consciousness into serenity, the more we have the capacity to generate serenity in others. Our mind is greatly affected as we work with the prana of our breath, and the more we do this, we see our field of influence increases and the effect it has on others around us.
 
According to yogic and tantric literature, we are essentially trying to create a prolonged and subtle breath which will lessen the impact of karma upon us and our environment.
 
Mukunda offers examples of pranayama for focusing the breath, and using the breath to deal with pain in the body, as well as creating more of a sense of overall calmness.
