In this talk, Tias Little discusses how our yoga asana practice offers a path to draw awareness inside and bring attention into the subtle movement in the body and the sound of the vibration of the subtle body.

Beginning yoga students may not have the training to be able to link their sensitivity to the subtle movement inside the body. Tias discusses how, in his training work, he is coaching students to develop their inner ear to listen and tuning in to the subtle body.

Tuning in to bodily sensations is the ground source, or the medium, through which we can make a connection with the subtle body. Sensation can be experienced on a gross level like pain or a real strong contraction, or, one can develop sensitivity for really minute, exquisitely refined sensations. The art of yoga asana is working with sensation on that level.

The pause between poses is an invaluable gap that invites us to become absorptive, tune in to bodily sensations, and reconnect to the listening. Unfortunately, in many of today’s fast track yoga styles, little time is spent in the pause.

In craniosacral theory, that pause is called the still point. As we begin to train in stillness, that stillness can begin to accompany movement as well. Unfortunately, modern life often has the opposite effect; Tias describes how stress and affliction can wreak havoc on the subtle body, and how to prevent this from happening.

We need to spend time outside the realm of volitional or willful activity in a place outside our attempts to consciously control life. It’s there, that one can experience real spaciousness and a vast quietude; this is like a fourth dimension where we have to step outside of our capacity to grasp and experience.
