Are emotional holdings, the residual of painful experiences or even psychological trauma best addressed at the level of the body, rather than the mind?
Very much so, says Tom Myers, a Rolfer, somatic visionary, and author of Anatomy Trains in this interview. The body holds unresolved trauma in the tissues, and by releasing chronic tension patterns, we affect not just the body, but the mind as well.
Past experiences get lodged in our body as well as our mind, explains Tom. As distress builds up in the brain, it only has two ways out – one is through the chemistry, which changes the messenger molecules, or neuropeptides, that are bathing the nervous system, and thus changes our mood. The other way is through patterns of tension in the body.
The trouble with those patterns is they don’t always move. Some patterns get chronically locked in the tissue fibers and eventually as chronic tension patterns. Most emotions start in your nervous system and then are exported to your muscles, and eventually they become part of the fascial tissues as well.
Even though fascia is the last stage in this development, it’s the first stage that you want to start to address, says Tom. Fascia is a more static holder of holding patterns, and if you want to change your mind, nervous system or even movement patterns, you’re working against the patterns held in this very slow moving, steady tissue. By the time your fascia gets stuck in that pattern, it is difficult to get out of the pattern.
However, if you change the fascia, it’s easier to change the nervous system and the circulatory system on top of that. Fascia is a slow moving tissue, so general exercise won’t change the pattern of the fascia.
Tom discusses the role of yoga in changing the pattern of the fascia. The sustained stretches of yoga, works the most quickly and effectively to change the length of the fascia. When you change the pattern of fascia, you can get down to the emotional patterning held in the tissues. It’s important for yoga teachers to recognize this emotional unfolding in the body, because it will happen to some students, notes Tom.
