Anatomy Trains and Functional Yoga Anatomy


Anatomy Trains is a unique map of the ‘anatomy of connection’ – whole-body fascial and myofascial linkages, developed by author and bodyworker Thomas Myers in the 1990s.

While anatomy often is taught in terms of individual muscles and their actions, the Anatomy Trains concept joins individual muscles into functional complexes. It further looks at these functional complexes within fascial planes – each with a defined anatomy and ‘meaning’ in human movement.

In this 2-part online course, Tom Myers takes a deeper look at how the Anatomy Trains Myofascial Meridians relate to functional yoga anatomy and the biomechanics of yoga practice. This course is the first of a series of courses that look at each of the Myofascial Meridians in terms of the common groups of movement in yoga postures, i.e. forward and backbends, sidebending, and rotation.

The concept of Anatomy Trains in relation to yoga anatomy offers a new understanding of whole-body patterning in posture and function, and leads to practical new strategies to help students improve stability, coordination, and resolve long-standing compensations in postural and movement patterns.

In this first course, Tom will focus on rotation and twisting actions, the origin of the common functional limitations associated with these, how to observe them in students, and ways to counteract or modify for common limitations.

  • How the Spiral Line shows how to resolve rotational compensations in a way that no analysis of any single muscle can give.
  • How the Spiral Line and the capacity relates to the tensegrity structure of the spine, and why rotation is critical for spinal health
  • How to observe imbalances in the Spiral Line in students
  • Common modifications and adjustments that can help create greater balance
  • How the myofasical meridians are linked to a broader concept of Spatial Medicine and offers a gateway to improve our KQ – our Kinesthetic Quotient, or body intelligence.
