In modern postural yoga, are we missing a vital element of the original intent of the practice?

In this interview, yoga therapist Yasmin Lambat, founder of the SomaSensing technique, suggests that by emphasizing alignment and prescriptive movement, modern yoga is overlooking a vital component of the initial intent of yoga.

The original purpose of yoga, as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, is the quieting of the mind. Patanjali emphasizes that yoga is about learning to tune into the body in a way that quiets mental chatter and brings us to a state of rest.

This is achieved not so much through prescriptive movements dictated by an external teacher, but rather by learning how to tap into the body’s innate wisdom by allowing natural movement patterns to emerge. This is a profound somatic experience through which we can unlock the process of self-regulation and find our way back to ourselves, Yasmin notes.

Yasmin emphasizes that this practice is not about learning a new language or vocabulary, but rather a strategy for approaching movement that is self-embodying and comes from the body itself.

Yasmin discusses how we can integrate natural movement patterns into yoga practice, allowing for a more interoceptive experience that doesn’t rely on props or strict cueing.

The essence of this is learning how to work with the fascial fabric, and allowing movements to emerge naturally, practitioners can find inner balance and ease in their practice.

This can help foster a practice that enables us to tap into the rich somatic sensations linked to the body-wide fascial network  and experience much greater stillness, equanimity, and inner peace in our practice.
