Kinesiology and Its Therapeutic Applications – Tracing the Origin of Common Misalignment Patterns in Yoga Asanas

Healthy Aging

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. To teach with confidence and efficacy, it’s of course important to know basic kinesiological principles, such as the names, origins and insertions of the skeletal muscles. But this alone is not nearly enough. It is perhaps more important to understand how the muscles work together so that the body can perform sophisticated movements like Triangle Pose, for example.

In this course, yoga teacher and physical therapist Judith Hanson Lasater offers an introduction to the important topic of kinesiology as it applies to the practice and teaching of yoga asana. We will learn and apply basic movement principles to common yoga postures.

Understanding kinesiology is the portal through which we can understand how and why to apply therapeutic suggestions to students, who are not functioning well and/or who are in pain when they practice.

What You Will Learn

  • What is the singularly most important movement principle to understand when you are analyzing why a student can or cannot perform an action?
  • How kinesiology can help us understand the biomechanical forces working around each joint.
  • How shifting the focus to the forces occurring around each specific joint, rather than just individual muscles, bones or joints, can give deeper insight into the forces that affect alignment in yoga postures.
  • How to begin to see the body as a functional whole and what can be in the way of that functionality.
  • The kinesiological foundation for common patterns of misalignment in yoga postures

This Course Also Includes:

  • Recordings of Both Sessions: Yours to keep. It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get the recordings of both sessions (both MP3 – downloadable and MP4 – streaming online), enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.
  • Transcripts of Both Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the sessions, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.

This course qualifies for 2 CEs with Yoga Alliance.

The practice of yoga is fundamentally an act of kindness toward oneself. This idea is often forgotten, but not by Judith, whose approach is warm, non-judgmental and responsive to individual differences and needs.

I wanted to expand on my thank you. Yoga U Online has been an absolute lifesaver for me. I moved from a yoga mecca to a yoga desert. Instead of having my choice of teachers and styles and special workshops, I now have to travel an hour to take a class. The excellent teachers and interesting topics at Yoga U Online have kept me moving ahead in my practice. I am grateful for all the wonderful yoga you bring to me. Thank you.
