In this audio course Anatomy Trains author Tom Myers reviews the anatomy of the pelvic floor with a particular focus on how it relates to postnatal issues, low back pain, and posture imbalances.
The pelvic floor is actually a complex of three layers of myofascial tissue, each of which performs a different function. Contemporary understanding of the pelvic floor pays attention only to strengthening the middle layer, and often overlooks the role of balance among the three. In this yoga download, Tom Myers examines the various muscles and fascia that create the floor to the ‘abdominal balloon’ and examine the role of the pelvic floor in breathing, sacral stability, and the ‘inseam’ of the leg.
This course was incredibly useful. Listening to Tom challenges me (in a good way) because he is very knowledgeable about both anatomy, function, and technique and I am still integrating an intellectual understanding with direct experience. Having the gift of the archival material allows me to go back at my leisure, and pause whenever I am unclear or want to go deeper with further reading. Combining pictures and mini-experiences with the information brought it alive. Understanding the pelvic floor, a complex area for me, has become accessible as a result of this informative talk.
