Gait, Posture, and Longevity: Movement Mastery for Optimal Health

Healthy Aging

Wonder how long you are likely to live? And, more importantly, how to optimize your chances of living longer?

There’s one surprising predictor of health and longevity that most people haven’t heard about. Your gait, or rather, how well and how fast you walk.

We all know that walking is one of the best things you can do for your health. According to research, while more steps are better, every 500 daily steps taken were associated with a 7% decreased risk in death from cardiovascular causes.

But did you know that HOW you walk is equally important?

How you walk, or rather your gait cycle, says a lot about how well you are aging, and hence, how long you are likely to live, according to research.

The way we walk can tell us a lot about how well we are aging, and by optimizing our gait, we can significantly improve our overall health and longevity.

In this course Dr. Emily Splichal, a renowned functional podiatrist and author will explore the importance of the gait cycle and how yoga and exercise can help optimize it. She will delve into the demands of an optimal walking pattern and provide you with the tools to support each of these gait requirements through yoga and exercise.

The course will cover the following topics:

  1. The ability to absorb impact: Learn how to properly strengthen and release the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the feet for proper function and movement patterns.
  2. Single leg stability: Understand how optimal walking is an interplay of the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and fascial system, and how to bring integrated stability to your yoga practice.
  3. Integrated mobility: Discover exercises that target and activate pelvic floor muscles specifically, and learn how to incorporate diaphragmatic breathing for improved proprioception and coordination.
  4. Forward progression: Learn how foot strength is necessary for gait and how walking speed is the secret to movement longevity.
  5. Optimal walking speed: Understand the power of the human foot from a proprioceptive and neuromuscular perspective, and learn how to use yoga to support each of these gait requirements.

This course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the fascial connection between the feet and the muscles of the core, and how to properly strengthen and release the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the feet for proper function and movement patterns.

You will also learn how foot biomechanics can affect pelvic stability and mobility, and how the anatomy of the foot and ankle relates to frontal plane stability.

By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of the factors that impact the health of the gait, and how to optimize the gait cycle for improved health and longevity.

What You Will Learn:

  • How optimal walking is an interplay of the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and fascial system.
  • The power of the human foot from a proprioceptive and neuromuscular perspective.
  • Take a journey to the center of our stability and how our base and our feet are connected to that center of stability.
  • Introduction to “Short Foot” and learn short foot exercises that are used to activate the deep front line.
  • Learn which exercises directly connect your feet to your core and improve proprioception and coordination.
  • How foot biomechanics can affect pelvic stability and mobility.
  • How the anatomy of the foot and ankle, specifically the anatomy of the subtalar joint, relates to the frontal plane stability.
  • Learn in-depth foot-specific programming.

Whether you are a yoga instructor, personal trainer, or healthcare professional, this course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to help foster better health and wellness through improved gait and movement patterns.

This Course Also Includes:

  • Recorded Yoga Practice Video: Enjoy a yoga practice that Emily has created for this course.
  • Recordings of Both Sessions: Yours to keep. It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get the recordings of both sessions (MP3 -downloadable & MP4–streaming online), enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.
  • Transcripts of Both Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the sessions, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.

This course qualifies for 3.25 CEs.

I wanted to expand on my thank you. Yoga U Online has been an absolute lifesaver for me. I moved from a yoga mecca to a yoga desert. Instead of having my choice of teachers and styles and special workshops, I now have to travel an hour to take a class. The excellent teachers and interesting topics at Yoga U Online have kept me moving ahead in my practice. I am grateful for all the wonderful yoga you bring to me. Thank you.
