Do you have an origin story? A transformative moment in time where something in your life led you to the practice of yoga as a way to heal, to find answers, to discover something that traditional approaches simply couldn’t provide?
If you’re a yoga teacher or long-term practitioner, chances are your answer is yes. There was likely a pivotal moment in your life—perhaps an injury, a health crisis, or a deep sense that something was missing—that brought you to your mat in search of something more than just physical fitness.
When Life Changes in an Instant
In this free download, YogaU’s lead yoga teacher Lynn Crimando recounts her origin story and what led her to yoga.
Lynn was the epitome of having it all together—a busy Type-A publishing executive serving as Managing Editor of the soon-to-launch ESPN the Magazine, a single mother who prided herself on “doing it all.” Her free time was devoted to vigorous athletic pursuits: swimming miles with ease, biking 75 miles at a steady clip, and maintaining a challenging Ashtanga Level 2 yoga practice that flowed through progressively difficult poses.
Lynn was, by all measures, very good at asana practice. She could nail tricky one-legged balances, support herself confidently in inversions, and she used breath awareness as a tool to steel herself through demanding physical exertion.
In her own words, she was also “pretty clueless about yoga.”
Then came August 10, 1997. What was supposed to be a scenic 50-mile bike ride with her daughter became the day that changed everything. A steep descent into a sharp blind curve led to what Lynn describes as an “unceremonious face-plant” that shattered her collarbone and permanently modified her skeletal structure.
That 30-second fall triggered years of grueling physical rehabilitation, constant pain, disrupted sleep, and permanent fibromyalgia. The emotional recovery proved equally challenging as she grappled with chronic pain, physical asymmetry, and situational depression.
But here’s where the real story begins.
When Your Greatest Teacher Arrives
It was during those months and years of reassembling her body and learning to accept lasting physical changes that Lynn’s true study of yoga was born. After years of schooling, training, and being in the world, she had finally encountered her greatest teacher—not a guru or expert, but her own wounded, healing body.
This is the profound shift that separates yoga from every other modality:
It teaches us that our body isn’t something to conquer or override, but our wisest teacher and most sophisticated healer.
The Hidden Crisis of Somatic Amnesia
Lynn’s journey illuminates what renowned author Tom Myers calls “somatic amnesia”—our cultural disconnection from the body’s essential guidance system.
We’re systematically taught from childhood to override our body’s signals, dismiss intuitive warnings, and push through exhaustion without listening to what our bodies are desperately trying to communicate.
The consequences show up everywhere:
• Ignoring health signals that could prevent major crises.
• Making poor life choices because we’ve lost access to our intuitive guidance.
• Continuing habits that drain our energy because we can no longer distinguish between what nourishes and what merely distracts.
• Missing the subtle early signs of imbalance when intervention could make all the difference.
Yoga’s Revolutionary Approach: Integration, Not Domination
What makes yoga different from every fitness program or healing modality Lynn had tried?
Yoga recognizes that your body holds the key to unlocking your inner healer.
Yoga works with multiple layers of our being—physical, energetic, emotional, mental, and spiritual—as an integrated whole.
It doesn’t treat symptoms in isolation; it teaches us to reconnect with our “wisdom body”—that sophisticated internal guidance system that knows exactly what we need for healing and wholeness.
As Lynn discovered through her own transformation, we’re born with this embodied intelligence, but as we grow up, we slowly lose connection with it. As Lynn puts it, “You start out smart, and they teach you to be stupid.”
Society conditions us to abandon our innate wisdom, but yoga offers us a pathway back.
Your Return to You: Reconnecting with Your Wisdom Body
