Songs of the Spine – Yoga, Scoliosis and Spinal Health

Back Health

Your spine is a long curving river….in scoliosis, and indeed in all spinal terrains, it is important to sense the course of the river, the riverbanks, the surrounding country. To encounter the inflow of the tributaries of the limbs, and observe their impact on the course of the river-spine. The interior body as felt, known place.

Practicing or teaching yoga to people with a scoliosis requires a particular sensitivity of awareness. Often the asymmetric body feels mysterious, its position in space and its relationships, one part to another, confusing and ambiguous to the inhabitant. Balance can be challenged, the free flow of the breath impaired. The body’s landscape may feel restricted in places, unstable in others.

All spines have a level of asymmetry.  By practicing with clarity and precision, with appropriate support, and with an intelligence of application, we can learn how to offer space and movement in the body; strengthening and stabilising – penetrating the body cleanly. In using your limbs to connect into and relate with your spine, functional balance and integration are afforded. Together with a knowledge and direct experience of your architecture (your embodied anatomy), real change in your spine is possible!

Join Australian yoga therapist Narelle Carter-Quinlan for a 2-part online course on how to de-compress your spine, creating length (both traction and internal lift) and building a functional stability. Spinal support from a deep awareness of the fascial web, the organic body, developmental movement patterns and a deep re-membrance of embryology return the body to its full connectivity in gravity and breath.

Join Narelle for a rich journey in practicing yoga with scoliosis, whether you are a yoga Teacher supporting students with scoliosis, or a yoga student, yearning to experience your spine differently.

What You Will Learn

  • What is scoliosis and how does it impact the body?
  • The difference between functional scoliosis (extremely common) and structural scoliosis (more rare).
  • How yoga can offer relief for scoliosis and general back issues.
  • How to learn to feel the sensation of the spine in asymmetry.
  • How to create spinal length and stability.
  • The role of the standing asana in scoliosis – establishing your foundation!
  • How to work with the trestler and wall ropes as well as useful home adaptations anyone can do.
  • The beginnings of accessing the lumbar spine through the work in the lower limbs, and of offering change within the thoracic curve through the upper limbs.

This Course Also Includes:

  • Yoga Practice: Join Narelle in a guided yoga practice based on her teachings during the course.
  • Recordings of Both Sessions: Yours to keep. It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get the recordings of both sessions, enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.
  • Transcripts of Both Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the sessions, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.

Special Note: Narelle’s practice centers around yoga as a spiritual practice of, above all, embodiment and consciousness. Whilst yoga is undoubtedly a physical practice of often intense and incisive application, Narelle views yoga as not a mere ‘musculoskeletal therapy,’ but rather a profound vehicle of self study.

This course qualifies for 2.5 CEs with Yoga Alliance.

Narelle Carter-Quinlan BAppSc (Biomed, Hum Mov Stud) is a global leading exponent on yoga with scoliosis and embodied spinal anatomy. Her unique body of work integrates the practice of yoga with the embodiment of anatomy.

I wanted to expand on my thank you. Yoga U Online has been an absolute lifesaver for me. I moved from a yoga mecca to a yoga desert. Instead of having my choice of teachers and styles and special workshops, I now have to travel an hour to take a class. The excellent teachers and interesting topics at Yoga U Online have kept me moving ahead in my practice. I am grateful for all the wonderful yoga you bring to me. Thank you.
