Yoga Pose Video Tutorial for Warrior I Pose
Virabhadrasana I
Warrior I is a superior standing yoga pose when practiced with a neutral pelvis and healthy spinal alignment. Because of the position of the back leg, you may find your hips in a slight anterior tilt; it’s important to counteract this tendency by keeping the buttocks heavy and the pelvis in neutral.
Awareness of individual needs is critical, because not everyone’s pelvic position and stance will be the same. Special care needs to be taken to make sure you are not dumping too much weight into your lower back or torquing your back hip or knee in Warrior I. It’s easy to miss the subtleties within this pose, so be sure to approach it mindfully without rushing your setup.
Finding the right alignment for your body may take years. It may be helpful to refine Warrior I in private sessions with an experienced yoga teacher.
So how do you find the correct foot alignment in Warrior I for your body (without one-on-one sessions, or years of practice?) To isolate this concept without all the complexities of the full yoga posture, Doug Keller suggests starting from a supported Warrior III, or Standing L Pose, to find the correct position for your body. To find balanced rotation in your back leg, activate your glutes, and protect your low back and knee, follow along with this yoga video tutorial.
