Alan Finger and Sarah Platt Finger
ISHTA Yoga, Tantra, yoga philosophy
Yogiraj Alan Finger is founder of ISHTA Yoga, a style of yoga which blends the ancient and contemporary sciences of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda into a complete and comprehensive system of self-development. ISHTA aims to give each student an understanding of how to incorporate aspects from various yoga styles and practices in a way that best suits their individual paths.
ISHTA yoga was created by Alan together with his father, Kavi Yogi Swarananda Mani Finger, who was a student of Paramhansa Yogananda, one of the first Indian spiritual leaders to teach in the West. Alan’s background includes studies with Swami Venkatesananda (friend of T. Krishnamacharya and Sivananda’s ‘jewel student’), and Tantric master Shuddhand Bharati, who initiated him into Tantra.
Seeking to integrate and celebrate the different teachings and lineages that passed through their ashram, Mani and Alan created ISHTA Yoga. ISHTA aims to give each student an understanding of how to incorporate aspects from various yoga styles and practices in a way that best suits their individual paths.
Alan co-founded the original Yoga Works as well as the Yoga Zone studios (later Be Yoga) in New York City, which rejoined the Yoga Works family in 2004. Alan currently teaches in the ISHTA Yoga studios in Manhattan together with his partner and wife Sarah Platt Finger.
Sarah co-founded ISHTA Yoga with her husband, Alan Finger in May 2008. As the Teacher Training Director, Sarah helped to develop one of the most renowned Teacher Training programs in New York City. She was also instrumental in the creation of ISHTA Europe, which currently holds trainings in London and Stockholm. Her partnership with Alan has informed her teachings on multiple levels and graced her with the opportunity to teach all over the world including Tokyo, Munich, Stockholm, and India.
In January, 2012, just 3 months after her daughter was born, Sarah became the Managing Director of ISHTA Yoga’s two locations. In June, 2013 ISHTA was ranked one of the top 7 yoga studios in Manhattan by Citysearch. Sarah holds the title Yogiraj and developed her own signature class “Sweat and Samadhi,” which is taught by ISHTA teachers worldwide. Her classes offer a blend of alignment-based flow, breath awareness, kriya techniques and Tantric meditation that enable the practitioner to experience the essence of the Self. Her daughter, Satya, inspires her every day to live a life based truthfulness and self-empowerment.
