Go measure your height.
Seriously. Stand against a wall, mark the spot, and compare it to what your driver’s license says. Because that number may tell you more about how well you’re aging than almost any test your doctor can run.
Wait — My Height?
It sounds almost too simple, right? We’re used to tracking cholesterol, blood sugar, bone density, blood pressure.
But it turns out that how much height you’ve lost may be one of the most powerful — and most overlooked — indicators of your overall health, your risk of chronic disease, and even how long you’ll live.
And here’s the part that makes researchers scratch their heads: it’s not just about osteoporosis.
Losing height predicts heart attacks. It predicts respiratory disease. It predicts mobility problems, fractures, and early death — even in people who’ve never had a heart issue or a broken bone.
Let that sink in. Losing an inch or more in height was linked to a 64 percent higher risk of dying in one major 20-year study of over 4,000 men. A 42 percent jump in heart attack risk — in people with no prior heart disease.
And a massive Japanese study of 222,000 people found that losing as little as half a centimeter in just two years bumped mortality risk up by 26 percent. For women, the news was equally sobering: losing more than 2 cm nearly doubled the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke.
So… why on earth would getting shorter make your heart more vulnerable? Or shorten your life?
The Answer Is in Your Spine
Height loss doesn’t happen in your legs. It happens in your spine — specifically, in the squishy discs between your vertebrae.
Those discs make up a full quarter of your spine’s length — about six to seven inches’ worth. When you’re young, they’re plump, juicy, and resilient. But here’s the thing: they start drying out in your 40s, earlier than any other tissue in your body. By 80, about 80 percent of us show significant disc degeneration.
And they can’t help themselves. Unlike almost every other tissue — even your teeth and hair — your spinal discs have no blood supply of their own. They’re entirely dependent on movement to soak up nutrients and squeeze out waste. No movement, no nourishment. Without varied spinal movement, your discs literally starve.
The good news? That drying-out process is not a one-way ticket. It’s driven largely by how we move — or don’t. And that means we have far more power over it than most people realize.
But Here’s the Real Surprise: It’s Not Just About Your Back
If losing height were just about creaky backs and stiff mornings, it would be annoying but manageable. The reason researchers are paying attention is that your spine affects everything.
Your spine houses the spinal cord — the nerve superhighway between your brain and every organ, muscle, and system in your body. When the spine stiffens, compresses, or loses its natural curves, that communication gets disrupted. Think of it like a garden hose with a kink: the water still flows, but not freely. Not fully.[8]
A healthy spine means proper nerve flow, even pressure on the discs, good breathing mechanics (your diaphragm attaches directly to the spine), strong core balance, and healthy flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
An unhealthy spine starts a slow-motion cascade: compromised nerves, restricted breathing, poor balance, reduced organ function, and eventually, the loss of independence that none of us wants to think about.
The Posture Problem Nobody’s Talking About
You know that hunched, rounded-forward posture some people develop as they get older? It has a clinical name — hyperkyphosis — and it turns out to be far more than a cosmetic issue.
How much more? Try this: a 42 percent higher risk of dying.
That’s what a major study of nearly 3,000 men over 65 found. The worse the posture, the higher the mortality risk — and it wasn’t explained by osteoporosis, fractures, or how active they were. A Japanese study found the same thing: severe kyphosis nearly doubled both the risk of death and the risk of losing independence.
Why? When the upper back rounds forward, the chest cavity compresses. The lungs can’t fully expand. The heart has less room. The digestive organs get squeezed. All those vital body cavities — the spaces that give your lungs, heart, and gut room to do their jobs — slowly lose their integrity.
But here’s the encouraging part: clinical trials show that targeted back strengthening and posture exercises can actually reverse kyphosis. This isn’t a one-way street.
Your Spine Is Talking to Your Brain (and Vice Versa)
Here’s something truly mind-bending.
Your brain has its own nightly cleaning crew — a waste-clearance system called the glymphatic system that flushes out toxic metabolic junk, including the proteins linked to Alzheimer’s. This system runs on cerebrospinal fluid, which flows along the spinal cord.
When that flow slows down, the trash doesn’t get taken out. And a 2019 study found that decreased cerebrospinal fluid flow was directly associated with cognitive decline in older adults.
What keeps that flow healthy? Movement. Posture. A mobile spine.
We’re still early in understanding this connection, but the implication is tantalizing: taking care of your spine may be one of the best things you can do for your brain.
The Vicious Cycle That Starts with Back Pain
Now here’s where this gets personal for anyone over 50.
Back pain is the #1 reason people stop exercising. Not bad knees. Not lack of motivation. Back pain.
And it’s staggeringly common — 619 million people worldwide, projected to reach 843 million by 2050. Over a third of Americans over 65 deal with chronic pain.
When back pain pulls you out of your movement routine, a predictable downward spiral kicks in: muscles shrink, metabolism slows, bones weaken, balance goes, fall risk rises. The less you move, the worse the spine gets. The worse the spine gets, the less you can move.
There’s only one way to break that cycle: targeted, intelligent movement that specifically nourishes the spine.
Most Exercise Misses the Spine Entirely
Think about the exercise most people do: walking, running, cycling, weight machines. In all of them, the arms and legs do the work while the spine stays essentially locked in place.
“Movement is like vitamins for our body,” notes one spinal health program. “Different movements have different effects.” We wouldn’t dream of eating only one nutrient. But when it comes to the specific movements that nourish the spine, most of us are profoundly malnourished.
The Yoga Difference

This is where yoga is genuinely different.
Yoga is one of the few practices that systematically moves the spine through every direction it was designed to go — forward bends, backbends, side bends, twists. “Very little of life is spent actually opening up,” observes yoga teacher Anita Boser, “but opening the body is a major part of yoga”.
Yoga also breaks the movement ruts that quietly wear us down. The yogic tradition calls these grooves samskaras — the patterns we fall into when we stop paying attention. “If I go into Warrior I without awareness, I’ll do it the same way I always do,” Boser notes. “A good yoga teacher will help us get out of those ruts”.
And the clinical evidence keeps building. A 2024 Cleveland Clinic trial published in JAMA Network Open found that just 12 weeks of therapeutic yoga significantly reduced both pain and disability in people with chronic low back pain — while also cutting pain medication use and improving sleep. Benefits lasted six months.[16]
The Bigger Picture: Your Spine and the Metabolic Health Connection
For those of us interested in aging well, there’s one more thread worth following.
A mobile spine isn’t just about comfort or flexibility. It’s the central highway of your nervous system — directly influencing your stress response, inflammation levels, and the metabolic signaling that governs how your body produces energy, manages blood sugar, and repairs itself.
The vagus nerve, which runs alongside the spine, is a major player in the gut-brain connection, inflammatory regulation, and your ability to shift out of chronic stress and into healing mode. When the spine becomes rigid and compressed, it doesn’t just hurt — it can affect your breathing, your digestion, your sleep, and your body’s capacity to recover.
Everything is connected. And the spine is where it all converges.
