Judith Hanson Lasater

Judith Hanson Lasater The practice of yoga is fundamentally an act of kindness toward oneself. This idea is often forgotten, but not by Judith, whose approach is warm, non-judgmental and responsive to individual differences and needs. Judith Lasater has taught yoga since 1971. She holds a doctorate in East-West...

Most yoga students think of yoga as the physical postures of asanas or the breathing practices of pranayama.

However, in Patanjali's Yoga Sutra we are introduced to the Yamas and Niyamas, the ethical guidelines for all practitioners. In other words, the classical teachings of yoga begin not with asana, but rather with the guidelines for how we can become our best selves and live in the world in a way that reduces stress and suffering for ourselves and others.

This rationale makes a lot of sense – if we practice yoga regularly, but have a lifestyle that invites stress and suffering into our lives, the physical practice of yoga is less likely to bring us the benefits we want.

The practices of yoga are meant to touch the whole fabric of our lives, not just our physical health. In this course, Judith Hanson Lasater offers an introduction to the Yamas and Niyamas and shows how they have practice relevance in modern-day as a practical approach to lifestyle medicine based on the ancient yoga teachings.
