Yoga Pose Video Tutorial for Chaturanga Dandasana

Chaturanga Dandasana

In Four-Limbed Staff Pose, the goal is to create a perfect 90-degree angle at the elbows, so the shoulders don’t dip down lower than the elbows. It can be difficult to determine whether you are maintaining correct yoga alignment in this posture. Using blocks will provide guidelines for proper height and give you feedback about where your body is in space.

You might be surprised how “high” it feels to be in the correct alignment in this yoga pose. If you experience this surprise, it’s possible that you have been bending your elbows too much and going too low in the asana.

Piriformis Pain: A Yin Yoga Sequence to Alleviate Piriformis Syndrome Symptoms

Apr 27 – By: Leah Sugerman, E-RYT 500, YACEP

The piriformis is a little muscle that can be a big pain. In our modern world, we are highly susceptible to a number of incongruencies in the body because of weakness and inflexibility within certain muscles. This is particularly true of the piriformis due to one very important factor: sitting. It’s said that “sitting is … Continued

Know Your Yoga Asana: Demystifying Sanskrit Posture Names

Apr 20 – By: Nina Zolotow, RYT 500

So far, in Part 1 we learned about how English and Sanskrit are related, so some of those mysterious words you’ve been hearing will actually be easy to remember if you connect them with the corresponding English words (for example, “sputa” for “supine” and “kona” for “corner/angle”). Then in Part 2, we learned some of the Sanskrit words … Continued

King Dancer Pose: What You’re Missing When the Pose Won’t Hold

Apr 19 –

King Dancer Pose (Natarajasana) is one of yoga's most beautiful shapes — a standing backbend that opens the shoulders, hip flexors, and heart simultaneously, balanced on a single leg. It's also one of the most misunderstood. Most practitioners approach it by kicking back hard, grabbing whatever they can reach, and hoping balance holds. The result … Continued

Why Your Hamstrings Stay Tight No Matter How Much You Stretch

Apr 18 –

Tight hamstrings are one of the most common physical complaints in the world — and one of the most persistently mishandled. The standard response is to reach for your toes, feel the pull, and hold. But that pull often signals strain rather than productive lengthening, and it rarely produces lasting change. Yoga for beginners hamstring … Continued

Crow Pose: What Nobody Tells You About Crow Pose (And Why You Keep Falling)

Apr 17 –

Crow Pose (Bakasana) has a reputation that precedes it. Most practitioners see it performed in class — arms bent, body lifted, balance somehow held — and quietly decide it isn't for them. It looks like a feat of upper body strength. It looks like something that requires fearlessness, or at least a willingness to land … Continued

Backbends Tutorial: Building Real Flexibility Without the Low Back Pain

Apr 16 –

If backbends have ever left you gripping your low back, you're not alone. You're also not broken. Most people who sit for long hours simply aren't set up to bend backward safely yet. Hip flexors shorten from years in a chair. The chest rounds forward around a keyboard. Over time, the mid-back stiffens from all … Continued
