Triangle Pose: The Reach That Makes It a Full-Body Stretch

Tias Little demonstrating Triangle Pose (Utthita Trikonasana) with a block under the bottom hand and top arm reaching toward the ceiling.

Triangle Pose (Utthita Trikonasana) is a standing staple, and yet many of us practice it in a way that quietly shortchanges the body. The instinct is to reach for the floor, so we collapse down through the bottom side to get our hand there. The pose becomes a shape we make rather than a stretch we feel. There is a more rewarding way in, and it starts with a single change in intention: reach long instead of reaching down.

How the Right Reach Transforms Triangle Pose

Picture your torso as a line you want to keep long on both sides, top and bottom. When you fold toward the floor, the bottom side crumples and the stretch disappears. When you reach out through the crown of your head instead, both sides stay long, and the pose opens through your hamstrings, hips, and chest. This is why a block under your bottom hand helps so much. It brings the floor up to meet you, so you can rest your hand without collapsing. As a result, you keep the length that makes Triangle genuinely feel like a full-body stretch.

The Triangle Pose Alignment Tias Covers in This Practice

In this tutorial, Tias Little walks you through Utthita Trikonasana with the detail this pose deserves. First, you will set your foundation: front foot pointing forward, back foot at a 45-degree angle, legs strong and straight, with a microbend if you tend to hyperextend. Then he guides the hip action, drawing your front hip back and your back hip forward so they stack. Next, he shows you where to rest your bottom hand, whether on your shin, a block, or the floor. Meanwhile, you reach equally through both arms and rotate your chest toward the ceiling without straining your neck. Throughout, he keeps your standing leg engaged but never locked.

Extending in Two Directions

Here is the reframe worth carrying with you. Triangle is not about folding in one direction to reach something. Rather, it is about extending in two directions at once, long through the bottom side and long through the top. So when you stop chasing the floor and start reaching through your whole body, the pose changes entirely. It stops feeling cramped and starts feeling spacious, which is exactly what it was meant to offer.
